102 Key Principles for Success

Principle 64 - Positive vs. Negative Speech

Are you a positive or a negative person?

Are you not sure? Well, this is important to know. Ask people. Notice the words you use. Are you Debby Downer? Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Look at the list of positive words and negative words. Use more positive than negative. The reason is most people hate negative people and love positive people. Of course, this isn't always the case but for the most part is true.

Read the previous sentence again and focus on the "people hate" vs. "love." How do these words make you feel?

If you're spewing:
  • What you hate
  • What went wrong
  • Why life sucks
  • What negative thing happened
  • Why you can't
You're not liked as much as someone who talks in a more positive tone.

So for today track the people you know and rate or count the negativity or positivity they bring.

Relationships are poisoned by focusing on the negative. Try to eliminate as many negative messages in your communications.

Today look at all emails you send out with an eye to positive and negative words and track the ratio. You want to get this ratio as high positive as possible.

Look at your tweets. Look at how you talk to friends and family. Listen to how likable people talk.
